A MOMENT IN ROTARY

FOR DISTRICT 6580

DECEMBER 17, 2007

Dear Rotary Leaders:

This memo is full of helpful miscellaneous information.  If you have news about your club please SHARE IT with us.  Lee and I send Holiday Greetings and wish you and your family the warmth of a blazing fire, sustaining food, the comfort of friends, the blessing of good health and at the end of the day a warm bed offering refreshing rest.    This will be the last memo until January 7, 2008 so let me take this opportunity to also

WISH EACH OF YOU A FULFILLING, PROSPEROUS AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR!

~ Club Banner Collecting:  I hope by now you have provided your AG with one of your club banners.  If not please do so soon.  They are being collected for the Rotary Club of Madison which experienced a fire last year at their meeting site.

~ When sending email messages to me and other district leaders please include “Rotary” in the message line.  I have been told that the reason messages are going to my spam file is that there may be question about the subject line.

~ Rotary Club happenings that SHARE ideas and successes:

From Jeffersonville :  Club President Marcus Edwards is a new father of “perfect” daughter Chloe Ann who was born December 5, 2007.  Mom is doing great also!

They had over 122 people to their Service Above Self dinner.  Marcus reports “we normally average 75.  We also had congressman Baron Hill and former Congressman Mike Sodrel in attendance with a reporter from the Wall Street Journal.  We got front page news in our local paper as well.  We raised $$3,611.01 with 83 active members – at $43.51 a person!!! for Angel Tree.  We were able to win over Clarksville and New Albany for the first time!”

From Greensburg:  The club has presented 4 Paul Harris Fellows in just 30 days.  PDG Jerry Fox reports the club is doing great!!!

From Franklin :  They are participating in the Franklin Community School Corporation program titled STUDY CONNECTION.  In its second year this program provides one hour of additional tutoring per week for the students who need extra help with schoolwork.  The program provides opportunities for the child to build a relationship with a caring adult that will hopefully contribute to the child being successful and staying in school.

From Bedford :  Received a wonderful estate gift from Mr. Opal Trueblood, a faithful 55 year perfect attendance member.  Their two Youth Exchange Students are excited about their trip to Chicago .  The club is exploring the possibility of sponsoring a Rotaract Club with Oakland City University students.

~ CONGRATULATIONS! CONGRATULATIONS! CONGRATULATIONS! CONGRATULATIONS!

Comparison of the October and November Attendance reports indicates that the membership of these clubs grew by at least one new member:  Bloomington, Columbus Sunrise , Evansville , Jeffersonville , Linton, Terre Haute , Vincennes and Warrick County .

Clubs that have increased their membership since July 1 through November include:  Bloomington North, Jeffersonville , New Albany , Terre Haute , and Terre Haute South

~ Thank you to the Rotary Club of Martinsville for being first in sending the contact information on their 3 new members and 7 members with more than five years of perfect attendance.    A report of 4 new members was also received from the Rotary Club of Vincennes .

~ Welcome letter to our newest Rotarians will be sent from the District Governor when you forward to me how to contact them.  I want to also recognize those Rotarians who have perfect attendance of five years or more.

~ Fire Victims of Southern California still need assistance.  District Governor Jim O’Meara reports the San Diego Foundation has established a fund to make grants to organizations with professional disaster expertise to assist individuals and families affected.  Online donations can be made at www.sdfoundation.org or send a check to The San Diego Foundation, 2508 Historic Decatur Rd. , Suite 200 , San Diego , CA 92106 .  DG Jim says you may want to contact a local club to organize a longer-term rebuilding effort.

~ 100 % Attendance Goal:  In the next three months please set a meeting date when members will strive for 100% attendance.  Make-ups will count.  SHARE THE RESULTS.

~ From Grants Chair Bob Browning comes this reminder:  Now may be a good time to make a contribution to the Rotary Foundation before this tax year ends. Encourage your members to designate their contributions to go to the SHARE program which ensures that 50% of the contribution in 3 years will come back into the district.   For every dollar donated to POLIOPLUS, the Gates Foundation will match it up to $100 million.  RI is hoping that every club in the world will come up with $1,000 to be matched by the Gates Foundation.  This is a three year campaign.  Many Rotarians in our district have joined since Rotary last had a polio donation campaign.  I hope all clubs in the district will have a program on polio in the next three months.  Remember PDGs Steve Richards and Peggy Peter are enthusiastic, good and willing club speakers.

~ World Rotary Day…..Humanity in Motion on February 23, 2008 is the date that all clubs are asked to implement a Community Service Project.  The idea is to “do good” throughout the District simultaneously and to get media coverage.  Please let your AG know of your plans by the end of January, 2008 so I can report the projects that are scheduled.   I am asked to also collect media materials and submit these in early March.  By implementing this media blitz, we will increase our visibility and awareness of Rotary.  Also it might help recruit new members.
